On the 27th of August, students of Kuen Cheng High School were taught how to identify Real News and Fake News on the Internet. With the Form Teachers presenting, it was hoped that students would develop their knowledge about media misinformation and learn to determine the integrity of the news.

Starting off was the question of what students would do when they come across news on the internet. Would they like and share, or would they question it? Some examples were brought up about misinformation on astronomy, Covid-19 and global warming.

Misinformation on Global Warming

Fake news is known as false or misleading information presented as news. Several ways were introduced to identify fake news. For instance, people should focus on the article’s source, the heading, the authenticity of the photos in the article, and the certifications of the author.

Identifying Fake News

Further on, the dangers of fake news were also shared with the students. An example of an article found on Facebook about a new fatal virus detected in the United States of America was shown. Unfortunately, most people believed this information which caused panic in society.

Websites Debunking Fake News

Subsequently, the Form Teachers showed their classes a few websites which detect and debunk fake news articles. Finally, the students were shown a short video to fully grasp fake news’s ideas and workings before ending the event.
