On the 4th of August 2022, Kuen Cheng High School Library organized a picture book sharing session by Ms. Lee Horng In from the Mathematics Department. The book shared by Ms. Lee is “Where is the Cake?” by The Tjong-Khing.

The sharing session started at 3:15 p.m. with the emcee giving an introduction. Ms. Lee then took over the baton by introducing the book’s author and illustrator – Mr. The Tjong-King. Mr. The is a children’s books illustrator. He won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs literature prize in 2005 with the book “Where is the Cake?”, which is the main book of today’s sharing session.

“Where is the Cake?” is a wordless book, which gives readers room for imagination. The main characters in the book’s main storyline are two dogs and two mice who stole a cake from the dogs. Other characters include a crane flying, a fox on top of the trees, a walking tortoise, ducklings following their mother, a weasel, a snake, and a camouflaged chameleon. There were also a few mysterious things that unfold during the story, like a football flying, and an unknown tail.

The following pages show lots of different storylines happening at the same time. Readers have to pay attention to the details in the illustrations to imagine the story happening. As the story progresses, other characters show up, including three monkeys, a family of three pigs, and a crying baby rabbit. In the end, it was a happy ending for all the storylines.

At the end of the sharing session, there was a free slot for students to express their views on this book. Some said that the book teaches us different moral values, while some said that this book needs good eyesight to spot all the characters and join the different storylines. There were lots of different opinions from the students. After a simple souvenir giving out and a group photo session, the sharing session concluded with happy and satisfied students.
