On the 16th of May, Hin Hua High School’s Mass Communication Society Editorial Board and Kuen Cheng High School’s Newsletter Club jointly organized an Online Typesetting Exchange Workshop. The workshop lasted 5.5 hours from 10:00a.m. to 3:30p.m. The goal of the workshop was to help club members to pick up typesetting skills, connect and strengthen the relationship between both clubs of the Schools.

The theme of the workshop was “Initial · Encounters” 《初·寻》. The title was created from the wordplay between the names of both clubs and the Chinese characters used in the title. The word “Initial” in the title signifies the determination that students experience when they join their club for the first time and how it will never be lost in the sands of time. The word “Encounters” in the title represents the pursuit of knowledge and finding more people that have the same goals as oneself. The theme represents how the workshop could mediate the growth of the students’ capabilities and mutual learning.

The workshop began with speeches given out by the teachers in charge of both clubs, namely Mr Tan Jing Qian and Madam Foo Mun Yee, along with the Presidents of the workshop organising committee, Chew Ker Xin and Soo Zi Ming. They stated that this workshop would bring unique opportunities, hoping that everyone would be able to gain something through the exchange. A story regarding a treasure hunt was also used throughout the entire workshop to bring entertainment and enthusiasm.

The first activity in the workshop was the “Pursuit of Treasure”. Students had to find and display items in front of their cameras according to the themes given by their leaders. The slowest student had to do a self-introduction as a punishment. This was to allow students to communicate with each other better. Following up, there was another icebreaker activity named “Mysterious Audio Tapes”. Students were to guess the names of songs based on the audio played by corrupted audio files. After both activities, it was clear that the atmosphere between both schools became more relaxed and less awkward.

Next up, three students, Ng Xin Ying, Gan Yu Min and Khong Onn Kei from Hin Hua High School were invited to share their experiences on typesetting using an online website named “Canva”. They introduced a selection of the club’s newsletter magazines, then explained the basics of editing while giving a live demonstration using Canva. After the sharing session, participants were encouraged to create their own designs using the website as an exercise to test their new-found editing skills.

After a 30-minute lunch break, two students from Kuen Cheng High school, namely Khoo Qi and Michael Ng, gave their take on typesetting using an app called “InDesign”. Apart from teaching participants how to use the software, the two also mentioned the hardships they faced while editing newsletter magazines for the club, even emphasizing on certain precautions that should be taken by responsible personnel.

To wrap up the workshop, participants were ushered into breakout rooms to discuss what they’d learned from the day’s event and exchanged their thoughts. With that, “Initial·Encounters”, Kuen Cheng Newsletter Club’s first-ever interschool exchange workshop with Hin Hua High School, came to a joyous and fruitful conclusion.
