After the holidays during the beginning of May, Kuen Cheng High School has gradually begun to relax the SOP, which has led to a breath of life back into the school compound. The School Hostel has also started getting back on its feet, a feat commendable for the sheer effort put into it.
True hostel life starts after the end of classes, where scores of students flood back into the hostel building just to stream out again in groups. The basketball and volleyball courts fill up with people eventually, and not long after sounds of laughter will come, carried by the lingering breeze. Students who leave school late will talk amongst themselves in envy as they are not yet allowed the privilege of playing sports in school as the hostel students are; Teachers look on in exasperation as students run together in an unruly fashion.
There are also certain surprising events that occurred, many of which can leave a student speechless. As we all know, some of our school teachers choose to stay in the school hostel for transportation and food benefits. Last week, I believe many students witnessed the grand spectacle of a young teacher playing badminton with a student while speaking on his phone. What was even more shocking was that the same teacher was seen teaching another teacher how to play badminton while the students around them watched, bemused.

The School Hostel also held a spring cleaning during the start of school after the May holidays, a grand affair that led everyone who lived in the building to clean their rooms thoroughly. The scent of floor cleaner drifted through the corridors cluttered with luggage, as most of them had put them all out to mop the floor. Light chatter echoed down the many halls, and there was also the sound of water gushing down gutters as students scrubbed down their balconies.
Exam season is approaching, and many students have begun their study grind, hoping to score well in what seems to be their first physical exam since 2019. Stress is at an all time high, seeing how many burn the midnight oil toiling away at their books and notes. Even now, students appear to be working hard in their own ways, preferring to even stay at the hostel during weekends.

All in all, we can see that the School Hostel is coming back to life, although it is still a mere shadow compared to what it was before. I truly believe that one day this pandemic will come to an end, and future generations will truly get to understand the fun that comes with a life lived side by side with companions through the many years of school.
