The endemic phase has brought about a new plethora of possibilities.
On 23rd April 2022, the third Kuen Cheng High School Assembly was held and broadcasted live through YouTube in individual Zoom classrooms. The assembly kicked off with the broadcast of the national and school anthem. Up next, two school prefects took to the stage reciting the school principles.
Our School Principal, Dr. Chua Lee Lee, then began her speech. She commented that our students have adapted remarkably well to physical in-school class following the previous year of full-scale study-from-home online lessons. In her slides, she shared about students’ social emotional skills amid the present state of physical class, drawing upon “Ideal Me” and “Actual Me” as the two main concepts. According to her, students must strike a balance in the aspects of confidence, time, space, and objectiveness.

Next, Madam Chua explained the new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Prevention of COVID-19 within the school compound. In the morning, students must carry out body temperature checks before coming to school and observation checks using the MySejahtera app when necessary. During recess, the air conditioners in the classroom must be kept switched off for better air ventilation, food will be pre-ordered from the canteen, pass cards will not be required anymore for in-and-out of the classroom, and the basketball field will still not be open for sports activities. She emphasised that students who happen to be in close contact with people infected will be required to fill in a Google Form and observe home quarantine. As for students who display symptoms, they must do a self-test for COVID-19. Basic measures were highlighted: wearing face masks, keeping social distance, washing hands frequently, etc.

Up next came a talk presented by two Prefect Club representatives. The Head Prefect explained about her personal growth experience as a prefect. Initially, as a junior prefect, things didn’t go as smoothly as it does now. She was not exactly familiar with the school regulations, drawing upon one experience of hers where she had a heated debate with a student who complained about sweets as restricted goods within the school. Nonetheless, she kept her cool and handled the situation level-headedly. She cited that the responsibility of all school prefects is to maintain the rules of the school. Confidence in oneself is a significant value in all school prefects.
Following the Head Prefect’s speech, the Deputy Head Prefect talked about her experience as a junior prefect. She shared a time when she passed by a class in which all the students were in disarray, and two senior boys were in a violent verbal fight. At the time, she handled the situation the best she could and got the help from a senior prefect to inform the Discipline Department about the situation. She shared that the Prefect Club has benefited her in terms of time management, leadership skills, and confidence. She ended by advising all school students to treat school prefects as equals and to acknowledge the school prefects’ responsibility as discipline-regulators. After that, the Head Prefect encouraged Junior Middle One and Two students to apply to become prefects.

Up next came a talk presented by three Class Monitor Club representatives. The President explained the role of the Class Monitor Club: to relay information from the school administration to students, to ignite students’ vigour in participating in school activities, and to assist individual class monitors in condensing the sentiments of all students. The Deputy then shared that class monitors are instrumental in setting up good communication between students in a class, as well as maintaining the class discipline. The other deputies shared that students should consistently communicate with class monitors in order to promote unity within a class, and to achieve greater heights collectively.
