On the 16th of April, Kuen Cheng High School’s Debate Club hosted a welcoming party to celebrate the arrival of new members. With approximately 45 new members, the event committee was sure to prepare entertaining games and gifts for them. The event was Harry Potter themed too.
The welcoming party started at 8:00 p.m. with the Club President, Cheam Wen Han, as the host. He first welcomed the new members before the Event Coordinators introduced a short ice-breaking game. The ice-breaking game was simple. A player would have to choose 4 numbers from 1 to 20, and they would have to use the words listed under those numbers to create a short story. Both English and Chinese words were given to both sides of the club.
Welcoming Speech by Madam Ng Ching Ru
There were 4 rounds each with some players managing to come up with amusing stories. A short welcoming speech by the teacher-in-charge was given straight after. Then, Wen Han proceeded with some minor announcements regarding the 保姆制度 “Apprenticeship System” where club members would be put into groups with a senior member to guide them throughout the year. Wen Han also mentioned the activities that would be held for the club this year along with a small reminder to hand-in the club fees.
Club Announcements
Thereafter, the Disciplinarians of the Club gave a short announcement regarding the club’s general rules. The rules consisted of 5 sections, namely Respect, Punctuality, Activeness, Discipline & Violations. Members were reminded to always adhere to the rules of the Club before proceeding with the rest of the event.

Games Session
Following up, the Event Coordinators ushered club members into their respective groups for a game session. There were 10 groups in total, each with a game host to lead them in the 5 games that they would be playing. The games were chosen in random sequences. One of the games was a Word Relation game where the host would state a phrase and players would have to take turns saying other phrases that are related to it without repeating phrases that have already been said. Those who failed to give a related phrase within 5 seconds when it’s their turn, would be disqualified. One of the phrases given was “Kuen Cheng”. The players gave answers like “Kuen Cheng’s Chee Cheong Fun”, “8 Floors” and “The Discipline Department”. Another word was “Debate”, with answers like “Arguments”, “Rebuttals”, “British Parliamentary” and more.
Next was a guessing game. A player would be given a word and other players would have to ask yes or no questions to the player regarding the word. There were words like “Chocolate”, “The Statue of Liberty” and more. There was also a game in which the first player would have to ask the second player for a favour, and the second player would have to say that “I am willing to do that, but…” and give a logical reason as to why they would not do it. The second player then asked the third player and the game continued. Some players asked the following player to lend them a million bucks, some asked them to climb up to the 8th floor of the School, etc.
Voice Acting Game
The following game was Voice Acting. Players were shown an audio-less video clip and had to voice-act the characters in the video according to their own interpretations of the contents. The game was awkward to most players but some had fun coming up with random lines for the characters. The last game was titled Mentally Disabled Person Gathering. The game would consist of “patients” and “doctors”. Patients would have to describe and act out their selected mental disability while doctors would have to guess what mental disability they had. For each game, those who were disqualified or for those who lost, were subjected to small punishments, such as being told to sing a random song.
After the game session, all club members returned to the main meeting room. At last, Wen Han brought the event to a close right after a quick group photo. New members would also be given a keychain as a welcoming gift.
