Kuen Cheng High School prepares for Chinese cultural week every year to usher in the Chinese Lunar New Year and the traditions. According to the President of the Committee for this competition, Angelina Bernadette Wong Xinyi, the school started planning for this cultural week the year earlier, and the preparation for this competition started right after the committee members were chosen.
The committee aimed to create a new and unique competition unlike its older versions, so the thought of incorporating popular games like the situation game and bingo into the event, making the competition much more entertaining to the participants. Due to a large number of people participating in the competition, a test portal was used, and the participants who made it to the finals were met with the riddles and games that used Chinese history as its storyline.
When inquiring Angelina about other ways students can learn more about Chinese culture, she encouraged students to join the other competitions that were held during the Chinese cultural week because one would need to research beforehand to get ready for the competition. Participants have to keep learning, intentionally or inadvertently, and understand more about Chinese culture. Other than that, teachers can also teach about Chinese culture during classes as teachers play a big role in educating students. Learning Chinese culture from a teacher helps them feel closer to the culture and have a better understanding of it.
As the interview came to the end, we asked Angelina which game she would like to introduce and share. She stated that she would recommend the situation game, as it isn’t the normal riddle game we are familiar with. Instead of asking questions about the histories and stories of the riddle, making it a new and unique concept. Although it is a relatively hard game to play, she believed that human’s curiosity to explore new things plays a big role in attracting a lot of people to explore how the riddles can be incorporated into the turtle game and play it well.
Even though this year’s competition was held online, it was a successful competition with no major setbacks, apart from a few minor issues on the technical issue and the unfamiliarity with the test portal website used in this competition. Angelina stated that they should have familiarised themselves with the third-party website to prevent such things from happening.
