Through education, we grow, but we will never forget the roots of tradition. On the 19th of February, Kuen Cheng High School held its first weekly assembly of the year, a tradition kept through the decades where each department gives their own reports and encouragement to the students. The assembly was held in each individual class where the class monitors shared a live YouTube video with class teachers there to provide relevant support.

The assembly started at 10:30 a.m. with the national anthem and school anthem being played. After that, respective head prefects recited the School’s Student Values 《学生素养》. Then came a report by Madam Leong Wai Lee, the Head of the Academic Department. The school’s academic schedule for February and March was shown, informing students that there will be a new timetable and classroom layout by 14th March due to the arrival of Junior Middle 1 new students. However, students from Junior Middle 2 to Senior Middle 2 are expected to continue with their online classes after March holidays too.

Moving on, the Counseling Department gave a report too with Head of Department, Mr Tan Yong Chin as the speaker. He enlightened students on the fact that our cyber information is collected and used in producing a tailored algorithm in order to satisfy our needs. However, such algorithms could cause a loop of negativity if the user tends to browse negative information online. Thus, students were introduced to the 《信运同转》 concept.
“信” stands for “信念”, belief.
“运” stands for “运动”, exercise.
“同” stands for “同伴”, companions.
“转” stands for “转念”, mind changing.

In such a concept, students were advised to adapt from a fixed mindset to a mindset of growth. Mr Tan recommended searching up works of Anthony Chan Chi Hang for more information on the topic. Exercise was also said to hold importance regarding the mental health of students. The companionship between students was also brought up as an important aspect of communicating feelings and changing mindsets.

Mr Tan concluded his report after reminding students that they are not alone and may always seek help from the School’s Counseling Department or external counseling services if needed.

Finally, the Principal, Dr Chua Lee Lee went ahead and started her speech by informing students of the unfortunate events that the pandemic has brought forth. Stating that a few students had contracted Covid-19, but no students that were classified as B-group got infected because of the aforementioned school cases. Therefore, the Principal concluded that the SOP enforced by the School has been effective and hopes that students return to physical classes by March as scheduled.

Madam Chua then shared two words with us, “教” and “育”, these two words stand for “education” and “nurture”. She also mentioned that growth is an interaction where both the teachers and students should be involved. One must be willing to grow in order for growth to happen. She told us that even though the information we learnt through textbooks may be forgotten, the hard work put in to learn it will always be remembered, turning into growth that will never be forgotten. The Principal later explained that the self-discipline found in oneself is the most important aspect to learning, and it can be honed through self-control and perseverance. Lastly, the Principal ended her speech and wrapped up the first weekly assembly of Kuen Cheng High School with well wishes for good health to all students and teachers.
