On the 21st of August 2021, Kuen Cheng High School organised a Teacher-Parent Interaction Day for students of Junior Middle One to Senior Middle Two. In particular, the students of Sr2A planned meticulously for weeks in order to ensure the smooth running of the activities for this special event.
The day’s event started at 8 a.m., with Form Teacher Madam Chen Pek Fong greeting all the students and their respective parents. Then, she allowed the emcees, Chloe Eu Ji Chen and Tham Yuanyi, to kick off the main presentation. Chloe, the Class Monitor, presented in Chinese, while Yuanyi translated the information into English.
They started off by introducing our class’s mottos and flag. After a lengthy discussion and voting session, the students of Sr2A settled on two mottos: “敬、静、净、竞、进” and “Don’t dwell on the past”. The former represents the class’ five core values, which are respect, tranquility, cleanliness, competitiveness, and improvement respectively. The latter serves to remind the students that, instead of worrying about bygone issues, they should keep looking forward and strive for a better, brighter future. The class flag is decorated with both of these mottos, and is a product of the students’ incredible creativity and hard work.
Then, the emcees shared their classmates’ thoughts on their lives as high school seniors. Unfortunately, many of them expressed displeasure as they are unable to attend physical classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, they have missed out on many exciting school activities and learning opportunities that they previously took for granted. They hope that things will change for the better, so that they will be able to create more fulfilling memories together.
After that, the emcees introduced the Class Committee, group leaders, and subject teachers. Each teacher’s introduction came with a personal message to the students of Sr2A. The teachers were satisfied with the students’ performance in class, many stating that the students are extremely attentive and cooperative. A few teachers even said that the students’ good attitudes have become sources of motivation for them. They hope that the students stay healthy and achieve good results in their upcoming SPM examinations.
Once the introductions were over, Chloe announced the class’s grade reports for the first semester. Overall, it was apparent that the students did well academically, however there was still room for improvement. She then revealed the examination periods for the second semester. Trial exams are expected to happen in November, while SPM will be held in February and March 2022.
Next, Chloe briefed the audience on the school’s newly-established learning records initiative, namely the Student’s Performance Record, in which students are required to submit a list of activities or competitions they have participated in, awards they have received, and important positions they have taken up in their years of high school. This can be a big help for students who are seeking to apply for scholarships in the future. These activities and roles can be sorted into seven categories: Personal Achievement and Honors, Teamwork and Commitment, Academic Accomplishment, Arts, Sports & Exchange Program, Events & Community Service, Reading Merit, and Exceptional Talent or Experience.
The seven categories for Student’s Performance Record.
Then, Chloe continued to brief on the Online Lessons Incentive. The aim of the marks is to encourage students to attend online classes on time. Students will be awarded 0.5 marks in their semester average if they have a 90% or higher attendance rate per semester.
After that, it was time for the game session. The game was called “Scavenger Hunt”. The Recreation Coordinators Ong Qing and Sow Yee Ling explained the rules of the game: students must hold hands with their parents to search for a specific item, and show it while saying “I love you” together with their parents. The first five who succeed will gain a point each round. Besides that, they also mentioned that there were both rewards and punishments for this game. They then separated the class into two groups: students from number 1 to 23 stayed in the main room, while students from number 24 to 46 entered the breakout room.
After the game session, the Recreation Coordinators announced the winners of the game and their rewards. Then, students with the lowest scores were asked to hug their parents for 30 seconds as punishment.
Last but not least, Yap Xiew Tong played a video, which brought back fond memories of the class. After playing the video, Chloe and Madam Chen thanked all the parents for attending. A few group photos were taken, and with that, the day ended on a positive note.
