On the 21st of August, Kuen Cheng High School organized a Teacher-Parent Interaction Day at 8 in the morning. The presentation was prepared by the students and contained some cute drawings of the Form Teacher, Mr Chin during class. They were told to enter the Zoom meeting five minutes before the day’s event started.
Parents and students waited patiently for the event to start. Soft lo-fi music could be heard playing in the background. Soon, the emcees, Ng Yi Phin and Lee Jing Hong took their places and began their opening speeches. One by one, the students turned their camera on. Parents could be seen wearing the same colored shirts as their children. As per the introduction by the Emcees, our Form Teacher, Mr Chin, proceeded to introduce the Class Committee along with the teacher’s helpers.
Next, the class average and highest marks were revealed. Mr Chin proudly announced that three students in the class had managed to achieve 100 marks as the highest score for Physics! Then, the emcees continued with showing parents the class flag and the semi-finished class song. Besides that, there was a quick recap on the few activities that the class did together, such as the self-introducing hand palm, Chinese New Year greeting cards and many more!
After that, everyone watched a short video introducing the class. The emcees then passed the baton to Mr Chin to introduce the education guidelines of the school and the new programme by the school, which is about recording students’ learning journeys, namely the Student’s Performance Record. There was also a notice on the next exam which will be held around the beginning of November.
At last, it was time for the most interesting part of the day, the interaction games! It first started with Mr Chin teaching the parents Maths for about half an hour, to let them feel what it is like to have online classes in front of the computer for the whole day. At the start of the class, the teacher pretended to take attendance and parents had to reply to the teacher’s questions in the zoom chat, like what students do in their everyday school life.
Then, parents were asked to fill out a Google Form regarding what they think about their child’s physical and mental health. Students had actually filled in the form much earlier with the same questions but from a different perspective as a student. The shared PowerPoint showed some anonymous responses from the students. Parents then could compare their responses with the students’ responses.
Following that, the students were requested to look at their parent’s faces, and vice versa. Both were asked to observe each other’s faces and notice the differences. For the last activity, they were asked to point out the differences they discovered earlier and take a group photo.
Lastly, it was the reporting session. Attendees were permitted to leave starting from this point. Some attendees remained as they had requested an appointment with Mr Chin. Our Form Teacher left our technical assistant, Miss Amelia, to take charge of the main room. He himself then proceeded to open a breakout room, calling the students into the breakout room in accordance with their class numbers. The atmosphere made the students break out in a cold sweat. One by one, the participants were called in. It was well into the afternoon when the whole ordeal was over. It was surprisingly not as bad as the students had expected. With that, the Interaction event ended.
