Kuen Cheng Cartoons Club organised a webinar on introducing the creative multimedia industry from 2.00 p.m. to 3.05 p.m. on 8th June 2021. The speaker, Mr. Damon Tan Chean Xiong, is the Marketing Director of Claz’room College, one of the leading multimedia arts colleges in Malaysia. There were approximately 130 participants. The webinar was immensely useful as he gave important pieces of information on the multimedia industry and how it has evolved over the years following the improvisation of technology.

Mr. Damon Tan explained that as networks changed from 2G to 5G, several sectors were also affected, such as the advertising industry, and local studio industries. As an example, during the olden days, advertisements were printed and stuck to boards, whereas now, animated LED advertisements are seen everywhere. The media industry has also changed tremendously, from media (books, radios) to multimedia (movies, video games), then to we-media (streamers, webinars).

After that, Damon introduced Claz’room College. Claz’room College is a school founded in 2009 by Mr. Wong Jin Min and Ms. Tung Yan Ning that focuses on creativity and innovation. The College’s aim is to nurture high value graduates in the industry for art. There is a 2 years advanced diploma program which includes 2D Illustration, 3D Animation, Game Design and Digital Film Production. He also gave an example on movie making. First, 2D illustration on the characters will be made, next, after the designers responsible for 3D Animation approved it, they will add movements so that the characters can shout, walk, run etc.

Claz’room College has various connections and activities (with Sony Entertainment and  MDEC exchange, Lemonsky studio visit, Star Wars Resistance and Transformers designing activities) for students. In a video played, most students of Claz’room College treat it as their second home and learn a lot there. Before the talk ended, there was a Q&A session. Some of the important points are as below:

  1. The fees for Claz’room College is RM39K to RM40K for the 2 years advanced diploma program.

  2. Claz’room College’s diploma is recognised by the government of Malaysia.

  3. Entries should be 16 years old and above.

  4. In this modernised era, whether multimedia industry makes the most money is not important but we should consider which industry will not be replaced by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

After the group photo was taken, the talk ended successfully. We would like to thank Mr. Damon Tan Chean Xiong and the students who listened attentively.
