On the 7th, 8th and 10th of June, the Chess Club of Kuen Cheng High School organised their 4th Annual Chinese Chess Competition. In order to create a platform for showcasing the enthusiasm and talents of students regarding their Chinese Chess skills, this time all students from Kuen Cheng High School were allowed to participate in the competition.
Using an online chess playing platform called PlayOK, contestants didn’t have to worry about entering the wrong matches as the system would automatically match them with their specified opponent. Contestants were also required to use two cameras at the same time, one showing their face, another showing their screen from a side view. The first and second day started at 2:30pm until 5:00pm whereas the third day ended earlier at 4:30pm.
Camera Showing Contestant’s Screen
Despite there was having 30 people signed up for the competition, only a total of 26 people showed up on the first day. 23 contestants competed in the main platform of the competition by having a three-round battle. The other 3 (of 26) contestants had their preliminary rounds held in a separate platform due to technical issues. After all these three rounds in the main room ended, the 14 contestants from the main platform with the highest score advanced to the quarter-finals. 2 of the 3 contestants in the separate platform advanced as well. Leaving a total of 8 pairs of contestants to participate in the top 8 on the next day.
During the second day, the 13 contestants stayed in the main platform while the other 3 were placed in a separate one. A total of three rounds were held, and the matches were much easier to moderate with PlayOK automatically matching contestants together for their matches. The 16 contestants were then rounded off to just 8, allowing them to proceed onto the quarterfinals.

On the third and final day, the competition was broadcasted live on Facebook for all to view and started off with the quarterfinals where 4 pairs of contestants played their best to enter the semifinals. Between each round, both contestants and audience were given short breaks before the competition continued. As the finals commenced, the audience watched in anticipation as finalists Neo Jun Wei from Sr1ScK and Lim Zhen Kit from Sr1ScE both played strategically. With contestant Lim Zhen Kit coming out as the winner, the competition came to an end, closing off the 4th annual Chinese Chess Competition.
