To encourage students to cherish food and care for the community, the teachers from the Counseling Department planned an activity to let students who participated in this event to experience live at home the feelings of hunger in other families – “24 Hour Famine Challenge” This is one of the three activities in a series for the upcoming Month of Gratitude, having themed with Discovering Happiness and Always be Grateful at Kuen Cheng High School. This activity starts from 3:00 pm on the 8th of June (Tuesday) to 3:00 pm on the 9th of June (Wednesday), but participants will have three different periods that they need to participate online via Zoom video platform for enabling the activities.

These three different sections are required at a different time slot:

Opening: June 8 (Tuesday), 2:00 PM-3: 30 PM

rsz_picture_3Students who accepted the challenge are sent to 7 groups, each group will be guided by a teacher.

When the students enter the breakout room of each group, everyone starts a self-introduction and signs a group agreement. The teachers of the Counseling Department are very considerate. They created a Padlet and welcomed all the students to leave a comment. If there is a student who can’t overcome the challenge, the student can open the Padlet to get the companion message to give himself a word of encouragement. This encouragement will become very important every time you felt like you were about to give up but you have to stick to the power of words! After the introduction activity, we attended a very exciting zoom party in the evening.

That night, Mr. Wong Cze Hoe from the Computer Department and our senior Ms. Red were invited by the teachers of the Counseling Department to join the “24 Hour Famine Challenge” evening party to use different ways to encourage the students who are challenged. Mr. Wong played “Terry Te Rui Huang ” as a Youtuber and the “elder aunt” who was wearing a women’s dress with a wig and recorded a video to entertain all teachers and students who accepted the challenge. Our senior Ms. RED was playing guitar and piano to bring both songs “You Love 105 degrees’ ‘and ”Sun” to the event. Of course, the most important section is “The Avengers Infinity Challenge ” hosted by Ms. Mo (played by Ms. Aw Pei Xi)!

Time flies, into the next day was the countdown section. Due to some technical problems, the section was delayed for 10 minutes, but it did not affect the students’ morale in looking forward to the countdown. The event was hosted by Ms. Tee Wan Chin who is good and steady at engaging all students to share their feelings or opinions throughout the challenge. She shared with the students that they may just experience hunger that will end, but there were people out there don’t know if there would be a next meal for them. In fact, we think that people who are experiencing famine are far away from us, but actually there are many cases around us in our community. Especially, during this ongoing pandemic, many families out there are facing the challenge of getting stable economic resources so that they are able to put food on the table for their family members on time. Through the group discussion, participants exchanged ideas and summarized that although we may not possess the economic capability, what we at least can do is to cherish the food we have been provided with, and then for those who are capable can even become a donor and share the food among people who are experiencing famine.
